Rising Freight Costs
June 25 , 2008
Question:
Freight costs seem to be getting higher every time we place a new order. Is
there no way to corral these high costs?
- J. Sturm, Tampa, Florida
Answer: Obviously, the cost of freight is tied to the cost of fuel. We are seeing
freight costs rising almost weekly. There are some things to consider
BEFORE you place your order:
- Make sure the order includes some overage. Running short is very expensive. Sending product overnight is cost prohibitive. Having the installer make a return trip also "runs up the meter".
- Do a total inventory of your needs. Base, reducers, transitions, ADA ramps, cleaner, sealer, top coatings, and adhesive are some of the items you might need. Order them upfront so your not "fedexing" at the last minute.
- Allow 3-4 weeks lead time when placing your order. Expedited freight is more expensive. Don't procrastinate.
Centaur uses a broker to coordinate our freight forwarding. They "shop" our
freight to multiple trucking firms who then "compete" for our business. We make every attempt to be competitive with freight. But understand that every time you experience a gas price increase, the truckers are having the same experience.
