Dents in Group X Hardwood

Question:Our Boflex floor is getting dents in it from our Body Pump classes. Any remedies?
- D. Ball, Perris, CA
Answer:
In the new age of "group exercise classes" getting more and more creative, the use of apparatus as part of the class has created challenges. Wood floors are not designed to take pounding from weights. Body pump classes in particular have created real challenges for the club owner. Our suggestion is to provide each participant with a mat to place their barbell after doing an exercise set. This will protect the floor and provide a constant reminder to the participant not to "drop" the weight. We would also recommend that the storage area for the weights be protected with mats so that the "errant" barbells that fall or get dropped while being re-racked will have less of a damaging effect on the floor. The issue is not with the wearability of the floor but rather disciplining the member to the proper use of the apparatus in the environment. The dents won't effect the performance of the floor when used for aerobics but they will facilitate a disciplined maintenance regiment that includes periodic screen and recoating.
